Imagine what it would be like to live a life where you were locked up and abused on a daily basis. Imagine being stripped of your ability to make decisions, to hang out with your friends, or to see your family. Sex slavery is a $10 billion industry, and while it might seem overwhelming trying to make a difference, there is something you can do! Break the Chains is a week long campaign to help you raise awareness of, and funds for, the prevention of child sex slavery. It’s a five-step process you can do by yourself or with a group of friends.
For Step 1, Get Linked. You’re going to do a bit of research and learn 30 facts about child sexual slavery.
Step 2 is Chaining Awareness. This lets you share that knowledge you just learned with your friends and family (and your classmates, and your teacher, your doctor, your neighbour, your bus-driver, your… you get the idea).
For Step 3, Locked Away, you’re going to transform yourself into a “throw-away child” for 24 hours. Your friends, family, and community will pledge their support for you while you go without something you think victims of child sex slavery wouldn’t have. This is a symbolic gesture to show your solidarity with those whose rights are being violated. Maybe you’ll go without your cell-phone, or wear a price tag around your neck. Remember, the key is to be a symbol for children forced into sexual slavery, so think about the kind of things they are denied and what their daily lives are like. The possibilities are endless, so be creative!
For Freedom Reigns, you and your friends celebrate the completion of your campaign, as well as the freedoms you’re able to enjoy by having a party (OneChild recommends a potluck!). Your party is a great time to reflect on what you learned during your Break the Chains campaign and think about other ways you can Shake the World!
IT’S TIME TO BREAK THE CHAINS!
